Bindhast (1999)

Bindhast is one of the movies that revolutionized Marathi cinema. An edge-of-the-seat thriller, Bindhast is the story of two best friends, Mayuri and Vaijayanti, from completely different financial backgrounds, who get embroiled in a nail-biting murder mystery. The woman-centric film focuses on multiple facets of society, from simple things like friendships, college rivalries, and relationships to significant social issues like stalking, crimes against women, the disparity between the rich and the poor in our country, and apathy of the police towards the criminals who haven’t been proven guilty yet. The story is gripping, and the buildup of the suspense actually makes our adrenaline surge as we keep wondering who the murderer could be, our needle of suspicion shifting to different characters from scene to scene. A good suspense thriller is the one where you cannot guess the ending, and this one not just does that, but gives you an unexpected jolt when the truth is revealed. Written by Ajit Dalavi and Prashant Dalavi, this movie can be classified as one of the classics in the genre of thriller and earns brownie points for the social message it gives.

Indian movies based on books

Muramba (2017)

Muramba is a sweet and sour romantic tale of two estranged souls. The story revolves around the relationship between Alok and Indu, and the entire movie takes place over a span of a single day. Alok and Indu break up after being in a relationship for three years, and how Alok’s parents get them to talk to each other, to try to see the fallacies of their own selves and to see from the point of view of their partner, forms the crux of the story. Each and every relationship – father-son, husband-wife, lovers – has been beautifully and delicately depicted.

The movie switches between the past and the present as the couple reminisces about various incidents that happened from the time they began dating, and the reasons they began disagreeing with each other. The story and screenplay written by Varun Narvekar is the strongest point, and the entire movie rests on the shoulders of the powerful dialogues between the four main characters.

The movie was nominated for best story, and best screenplay, and won the award for best dialogues at the 4th Marathi Filmfare awards.

Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy (2009)

This movie is the story of a simple, middle-class Marathi man from Mumbai, who has to struggle for each and everything in daily life, and believes that he is not given any respect, and is often humiliated by the people around him because of the fact that he is a Marathi man.

Chatrapati Shivajiraje Bhosle (or his ghost, to be specific), the great Marathi warrior king of the Bhosle clan, who established the Maratha empire in the 1600s, comes to meet the protagonist Dinkar, and guides him through every roadblock in his life, by making him take matters in his own hands, overcome his fears and prejudices, and learning to take responsibility for his own actions.

When Dinkar starts commanding respect instead of just giving in to disrespect, he automatically gains self-confidence to get things done. The story by Abhijeet Deshpande and Mahesh Manjrekar is written beautifully and captures the emotions and frustrations of a middle-class Mumbai man. The dialogues, especially those between Shivaji Maharaj and Tanaji Malusare, are worth listening to and gives a great lesson about the philosophy of life.

Sairaat (2016)

A movie that justifies its name, Sairaat is an emotional roller coaster ride that for a couple of hours makes us forget our own worries and nuances and makes us experience the bittersweet love story of the young star-crossed lovers, Archi, the daughter of an upper-caste rich politician, and Parshya, the son of a poor fisherman.

The delicate love story that blossoms between the lead pair who are on the threshold of youth, their inane balance between the innocence of childhood and callings of teenage hormones brings goosebumps.

The trials the two experience, when they enter the real world and face the harsh truths of life after eloping, have been depicted in a realistic way, and the emotions that override the love that once was the foundation of the relationship have also been beautifully captured. Written by Nagraj Manjule, who is also the director and producer of the movie, and Bharat Manjule, Sairaat, a romantic tragedy, is one of the biggest blockbuster hits in the history of Marathi cinema.

Ventilator (2016)

Book adaptations in India

A deeply emotional drama, yet humorous at the right places, this story revolves around a single yet significant incident. Gajanan Kamerkar, the patriarch of a family, goes to Coma just days before the Ganesh festival, and the movie follows the drama that unfolds as relatives and friends pour in, even as Gajanan holds on to life on a ventilator.

Estranged relations, jealousy, hidden secrets come to the fore as the situation starts getting tense. It also reveals how each and every person visiting Gajanan at the hospital has a different agenda of his or her own. Even as the family is sad and shaken from this sudden event, there is also anxiety about whether or not they will be able to celebrate the Ganesh festival amidst the looming shadow of impending death in the family. The screenplay written by Rajesh Mapuskar deserves accolades, as it is a tough job to write a comedy based on a tragedy, that depicts to some extent the reality occurring in every household when a family member has the misfortune of landing on a ventilator.

Aapla Manus (2018)

AaplaManus is an emotional mystery drama that explores the modern-day relationships between adult children, who have their own set of ideologies, and their old parents who might be restrained by their conservative thoughts. A balance from both sides maintains harmony, an imbalance pushing the relationship on a downhill course.

An old man, Aaba, falls from the balcony of his house and is comatose, two days after a short trip to Lonavala with his son and daughter-in-law. As inspector Nagargoje, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Aaba, starts interrogating the couple, many facts come to the forefront, including the disharmony between Aaba and his daughter-in-law, and the repercussions of the same on the family, including the grandson. Initially, inspector Nagargoje implies that the son and his wife abetted Aaba’s suicide. However, new evidence might indicate that it was a murder. To get them to speak the truth, inspector Nagargoje plays some mind games with the couple. As the story progresses, gradually the son and daughter-in-law begin introspecting their own selves and their behavior with Aaba.

This movie is based on a play written by Dr. Vivek Bele and is a moving emotional drama.

Natarang (2015)

Natarang, which literally means ‘theatre performer’ chronicles the story of a poor man who nurtures his dream of owning his own theatre group, and finally realized his dream through his passion for art, despite facing a lot of opposition from his family and friends. ‘Tamasha’ is a local, folk art of Maharashtra, which involves drama with dance and music. The protagonist Guna is forced to play the character of a eunuch, called ‘Nachya’ as this character is inherent to this dance form, and the female dancer agrees to be a part of the Tamasha group only if it has one. The muscled and heavily masculine Guna undergoes a drastic transformation in his body to suit his appearance of a eunuch, and loses support from his wife, and is ostracised by villagers. Yet he persists in his dreams to make it big in theatre. The movie also focuses on the local politics that goes on in villages and how innocent people become scapegoats in the race for power by politicians. The screenplay, written by the director Ravi Jadhav, is based on a Marathi play by the same name, penned by Dr. Anand Yadav.

YZ (2016)

YZ is a quirky, coming of age, romantic drama about a shy, thirty-something history professor, Gajanan, who still stammers when it comes to talking to members of the opposite gender. He gets transferred to Pune for a job, where his inferiority complex doesn’t allow him to make a mark as a teacher, the way he wishes to. Soon he meets a mentor in the form of a famous, eighteen-something student of the same college, Battees (meaning 32), who teaches him how to be one with the YZ generation. As Gajanan begins undergoing a personality transformation under the guidance of Battees, three women come into his life – Antara, a friend of his cousin, whom he teaches Sanskrit and who develops a massive crush on him; Parnarekha – a girl he meets for an arranged marriage, who seems to be decent and simple, but too religious and conservative; and Sayali – the long-lost love from his childhood. How Gajanan deals with the three of them forms the rest of the story. The screenplay, written by Kshitij Patwardhan is fresh and navigates all raw emotions a person goes through while dealing with different types of people in general, and in romantic relationships in particular.

Kadachit (2008)

A high-tension emotional drama between a daughter and her estranged father, Kadachit, which literally means ‘may be’ or ‘probably’, is beautifully written and tugs at the heartstrings of viewers. It is the story of a woman, a neurosurgeon by profession, who is excellent and skilled in her job with finesse in her skilled hands. Her father returns in her life after twenty years in jail, after her eyewitness account that he had murdered her mother, had implicated him. When her father plants doubt in her mind about whether what she witnessed was real or not, and whether she had mistakenly and wrongly implicated her father for a crime he did not commit, she begins losing her mind. Her mental state begins taking its toll on her skills as a neurosurgeon, and she is left clutching to what remains of her sanity and self-confidence. The dilemma she goes through and the mental turmoil that results because of the ‘probability’ she never thought about is beautifully depicted. The story and screenplay have been written by Girish Joshi, while the dialogues are by Prashant Dalvi. This movie with such a strong screenplay is definitely one of the masterpieces in Marathi cinema.

Kaksparsh (2012)

A tragic period drama, Kaksparsh is a story of a Chitpavan Brahmin family residing in a small village in Konkan, in the period between 1930 – 1950. The story focuses on the plight of young widows in those days when they were often married off even before puberty, and young widows had to follow a set of rules, traditions, and customs, like shaving heads, wearing no jewelry, or colorful clothes, etc. It also focuses on the traditions that are running in the Hindu religion for generations, one of which is kaksparsh, or touch by a crow. If crows, which symbolize the spirit of the deceased, do not touch the offerings in the funeral prayers, it is assumed that some wish of the soul is unfulfilled. The characters are well defined and make justice to the story.

The movie is based on a short story written by Uma Datar, and the screenplay and dialogues are written by Girish Joshi. This is one of the most poignant and emotionally moving period dramas in recent times.

Sufna

An excellent romance tale about conquering societal hurdles in a soothing manner. Tania as Teg and Ammy Virk as Jeet a.k.a Jagjeet are the two significant characters in the story. Teg is a cotton picker who enthusiastically works for her family all day. A family where she is mostly mistreated by her Aunt, who frequently uses derogatory language and regards her as a burden. Teg’s mother died not long after Teg was born. Her mother was a Muslim who had married a Fauji a Sardar (an Army officer) who also died and never returned, but Teg is hopeful that he will return one day. Jeet’s father, too, hanged himself when he couldn’t pay off his debts. Teg and Jeet’s love story blossomed with each encounter till Jeet proceeded to higher studies on Teg’s repeated requests because education is the only option to pay off the family debt. Meanwhile, Teg’s marriage is in the works somewhere else. When Jeet found this, he immediately went to her fiancé and mentioned how ill-character Teg is! As a result, he felt horrible and decided to clarify that he stated all of this since they are both in love and he just needs some time. Her fiancé agreed to assist them but afterward changed his mind and cursed Teg in front of her family, claiming that he wants to marry her as soon as possible. Teg was able to inform Jeet about the incident. Jeet returned as a surprise to Teg when he saw her hiding inside an old trunk in order to escape her marriage. He took her to her family, where her Aunt cursed her again, prompting her to cry and she says that because her Aunt provided her with shelter and food, she has every right to marry her off any place she wants, but her destiny is concealed with Jeet. Finally, she continued, “I always used to say, mere Fauji Aaoga”- my army officer will come one day- pointing to Jeet, who is now an Army officer. A must-watch love story! The screenplay is done by Jagdeep Sidhu.

Muklawa

A light-hearted love story where the main cast Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa complement each other so that a viewer can just take this love story in his or her best Punjabi movies. The story revolves around an old Punjabi tradition “Muklawa” where a wife goes back to her parental house for a certain period of time. Here Shinda (the character played by Ammy Virk) and Taro (played by Sonam Bajwa) are victims of this tradition as Shinda as a character always dreamt of unveiling her beloved wife. Shinda tried all sorts of discretion along with his chacha, who is unmarried at 50 and still full of hope of getting married someday and taking Muklawa for his wife, just to have a glimpse of his own wife(Sonam Bajwa). Taro’s elder sister is also married in the same household as Shinda’s elder brother. The time of one year which is decided to take Muklawa becomes a hurdle that results in a break of both the rishtas due to some misunderstandings. A light-hearted lovely story to watch. The Screenplay is done by Upinder Waraich.

Jindua

Jindua is an amazing movie portraying a love triangle between Jimmy Shergill, Neeru Bajwa, and Sargun Mehta. What I love about this movie is that it is not only about the love triangle but also focuses on the very hot issue of Immigration. It deals with the person who illegally enters Canada and spends three years of his life working in odd jobs hiding in barren places and living as an illegal immigrant where the immigration department cannot find them and send them to the detention center. But also this movie shows how love conquers and changes a person really when she wants to. In the movie, Neeru Bajwa is a spoiled child of a father who has money but cannot look after his own daughter who falls in love with Jimmy Shergill and understands the meaning of life but the twist here is that Jimmy loves Sargun, the girl who already had a bad past and has given her family a nightmare by leaving India, staying in Canada. The movie is worth giving a try. The Screenplay is well-written by Dheeraj Ratan.

Carry on jatta 2

The movie made me laugh on my knees. The most hilarious stories ever in Punjabi movies are a must-watch. If a person says I like only one Punjabi movie that must always be “carry on jatta 2”. The two most repetitive yet amazing dialogues are “main ae Kala coat aiveinyi ni paya” and “aeho ji aulad na maza na swaad”. The movie doesn’t have any logic nor conveys any social message. The story revolves around many characters and a love story between Sonam Bajwa and Gippy Garewal in lead roles where who is who’s a husband and who’s whose wife is really confusing among the characters. By the end, all of them are in front of each other and making the audience laugh with jaws paining. An amazing movie. The Screenplay is drafted by Naresh Kathooria.

Qismat

The movie is just like any good rom-com with a good cast. Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta in lead roles. As the movie’s title says, destiny. Shiv and Bani meet each other, part ways, again meet, then part to find out if their destiny is destined together or not? In the movie, they meet, pretend to be in a relationship to make Bani’s ex-boyfriend jealous. In all this game they both fell in love with each other. Shiv, who is already a failure in his village and started his life in Chandigarh, is in love with Bani and so is she. When he finds out that Bani is engaged he is also involved with another girl as an arranged set-up. Meanwhile, Bani’s health starts deteriorating and her father finds out about Shiv. When Bani gets to know about his fiance she sends him back. To find out what happens to their destiny one must watch this movie. The Screenplay is written by Jagdeep Sidhu.

Surkhi bindi

The story in the lead roles has Sargun Mehta and Gurnam Bhullar. Sargun as Rano wants to go to Canada and Gurnam as Sukha hardly earns to fulfill basic means of life for his family. This movie preaches love like anything. The lead actors’ chemistry is praised and loved by the audience. In life what we desire happens to us in unimaginative forms. In this movie, Ranu wants to get married to a man of his dreams who is handsome and will fulfill all her desires but the story of her life took turns and she got married to a factory laborer. When she opens up to her husband that she wants to open a parlor he did all possible efforts to make her dream come true and the rest of the movie is all about struggling and growing as a couple together. The funniest scene is Rano’s bidaai and the movie has beautiful soundtracks which go with the theme. The Screenplay is well scripted by Rupinder Inderjeet.

Laung Laachi

This movie has a very different place in Punjabi cinema. The story is about a girl who sings secretly and gets her first assignment, for which she gets a very petty amount. Her mother-in-law doesn’t want her to sing as she considers this profession bad and not eligible for a good family’s Daughter in law. They aren’t sufficient enough to live a meager life. Some incident happened when her mother-in-law gets to know that the singing can fetch her daughter in law a lot of money and their money problems will get solved soon so she lets her sing and fulfil her dreams but now the singing has taken her to the successful singer which is played by Ammy Virk and here he fell in love with the singer played by Neeru Bajwa at first sight. Neeru Bajwa‘s husband has been really supportive since the beginning but now the contract between Amy and Neeru a.k.a Laachi in the movie makes her husband’s identity secret and she’s not allowed to reveal that she is married. So the movie is full of ups and downs of a married couple as well as a girl as a successful singer. Anyone who loves Punjabi cinema must give himself a chance to watch this movie. The screenplay is done by Amberdeep Singh.

Sat Shri Akaal England

You will laugh harder if you see how Ammy Virk fails in the interview and is rejected in getting a visa for London. The way he mixes up tourists with a terrorist. His English is not up to the mark. He decides to find another way to immigrate to London. The lead actress Monica Gill Playing the role of Geet is marrying him, providing him with a green card, and charging him a hefty amount for the same. Once he is married to Geet and reaches London she tries to stay with her but she denies that the contract was just to bring you here and no personal relations. She is in love with some other guy. Now the immigration department raided Geet in disguise at a party. There she finds out that her lover ditched her.

When the real love story starts well she confesses in front of the officer that her marriage with Ammy was not for money but for love. She then tries to find anywhere and everywhere. This movie is my personal favorite. The Screenplay is written by Jatinder Lall.

Punjab 1984

Majorly starring Kirron Kher and Diljit Dosanjh, this movie is an amazing picturization of terrorism, brutality, riots, or better say communal riots and family bondings. This movie is a love story of a mother and a son. Where she is dottily and hopefully searching for her son. As the title says Punjab 1984 this movie is not only dealing with the riots that happened then, it is basically a story of a mother searching for her son dealing with corrupt and brutal police inspectors and the impact of such correction on common people’s lives.

The acting of Diljit Dosanjh and Kirron Kher does not let you move before the movie ends. The worst time in Indian history is filmed in this movie. The screenplay is well-scripted by Anurag Singh and Surmeet Maavi.

Nikka zaildar 3

This is a hilarious family drama. This is the third part of the same title but this time it is the debut of a new heroine. The heroine Wamiqa Gabbi likes Ammy Virk but she doesn’t want to marry a guy who works in fields and always smells stinky. She herself is an educated woman.

Each time Ammy wants to marry her she gives one or the other reason not to!
