How different is a growing publishing market like India compared to matured markets like the USA, United Kingdom, and China?

Publishing Market in India is widely focused on the base of entertainment. The growth of an author as an individual is majorly dependent on the genre he/she is writing. Mostly the entrepreneurs, coaches and leaders of the industry publish their books to gain the ‘Author’ tag. There’s a huge difference in the amount of the publishing charges. Foreign publishers in the market for self-publishing starts from 250usd to 400usd while in India the minimum amounts to ₹4000. Also as said the matured market of the USA, the UK has quality books on different genres and in-focused on the stream and the content. Whereas in India, it’s mainly about the launches. More books. Less Quality. More earning.

How has the growth and spread of e-commerce sites, E-books, and Audiobooks changed the writing and publishing industry globally and in India?

In India, writers and readers are inspired from authors and stories that are portrayed to them. The growth of E-commerce sites and audiobooks has drastically changed the platform availability, and widen the scope of ‘being known” To the mass. Previously it used to be limited to bookstores like Oxford, crossword and libraries to get the information of the new launches. Now that the eCommerce industry has bloomed many websites showcase charming books, even provide reviews and audiobooks to help people with disabilities and those who didn’t have much time to read but good wavelength to listen to the stories. Sales high rocketed but also this led to piracy of many books and unfortunately less credits to the original writer. The Search-able option helped Seo marketing and hence technology proved another boon. Also, Amazon’s Prime delivery made it easier for the readers who are keen to read books in a day.

We all know, a literary agent seeks an author bio, 1000 words synopsis, and 3 chapters of the manuscript. But, What are the things publishers looking for while selecting or rejecting a manuscript?

While reading a sample manuscript, a publisher looks for the content which has scope to edit and grow. How well the content is written is second priority, the first priority is to check whether the manuscript has enough potential to work on it. If yes, then what are things which can be done, the way which can be used to improvise a draft. If a manuscript passes these criteria, then well, you have done a good job.

How important is Author branding in the publishing industry? What other aspects should an author focus on outside the manuscript to improve the book sales?

Yes, the very important aspect for an Author these days is to go selective on their Author Branding program. Creating an image of your Author as someone who can help people when in shamble and recommend a better solution to their readers is what defines the Author to be the best in the field. This helps in sales of books altogether and also to author for their next projects. Traditional publishers many times gives royalty on the basis of the brand name of the author and hence they can themselves furnish more promising royalties and sales as and when people will here their Favorite Author is planning for the next book

With so many books getting adapted into a visual medium like movies or series on OTTs, How will this aspect impact the book publishing industry?

With the adaptation of the books in visual medium has both positive and negative effects. Mostly the impact is Positive as the consumer can connect more to the story, to the vibe and understand better the said and written plots. OTT Platforms in this pandemic helped a lot of people to curb their boredom and meanwhile to market well on them. Which somewhere increased the demand for the books. For the credit base, the movies and the series helped the publisher to get them a brand name.

How can publishers help a new and upcoming author in marketing his/her book and reach out to more readers? What will be your advice to young authors?

Author Marketing along with Book marketing is a good lead to generate a positive ecosystem for the growth of an author. What is the range of Author Royalties achieved in a traditional contract? What all things could fetch a better royalty for an author? How many books do you need to sell to become a best seller in India?

First of all, in Traditional Publishing the royalty depends on a lot of factors right from the popularity of the author, the potential market and the brand name the author carries usually it’s 5-10℅ . Secondly, in self-publishing, the author enjoys more benefit from the profit of the royalty mostly 90-100℅ . The percentage of royalty in Self Publishing many times just depends on Author Brand, it needs to be hyperactive and selling. Also, the books need to be on top 5 for consecutive 2months to sell more than 5000 books and be Best Seller, the tag justifies the royalty that comes in.
